Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and at least 15 people were hurt in an apparently premeditated detonation from gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The explosion occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the residence near the Verona region to execute an removal notice for three siblings who were older adults.

The three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

One male and one female were arrested at the scene and one more individual who escaped after the blast was found not long after. All three have been transported to the hospital.

The blast could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the scene revealed the building reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who added that efforts had been made to evict the three siblings in the previous occasions.

Property Situation

The president of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, said the residence was facing an eviction order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the three owners.

Mediators had been assigned to engage the family members who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the officers arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the residents set off the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Claudio Papagno informed reporters.

A gas canister had been set off, and the blast precisely impacted our officers,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also found at the property, the Interior Minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the blast consisted of 11 other members of the military police as well as three officers of national police and a fire services member.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

He was convinced the detonation had happened on a floor above the entrance and told journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the incident, he said personnel had “heard a whistle, likely the gas cylinders being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors informed Italian media, mentioning that the family members had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in honoring the trio of personnel who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
